I have 20+ years of working with elementary and middle school aged children and loving it. Everything from formal teaching, tutoring, substitute teaching, teaching children's church, homeschooling, camp directing and counseling, coaching and even cross country ski instructing. I know from working with kids, including my own, that it can be discouraging for them when they have difficulty keeping up with the rest of the class. It would be a joy to work with your child to help build their confidence and help them succeed so they can enjoy the wonderful adventure of learning. I specialize in 1st through 8th grade curriculum especially MATH (including Prealgebra) and Language Arts. I have experience teaching math in a private school setting, tutoring struggling students and homeschooling my own children. In addition to teaching, I have experience as a freelance editor and proofreader of college level term papers and so am fluent in grammar and composition. Years of homeschooling my own children has also given me the skills necessary to teach and tutor ENGLISH, READING, PHONICS, COMPOSITION and GRAMMAR to elementary aged students one on one. I have an engaging, affirming teaching style with built in rewards. Tutoring sessions begin with a free assessment to identify any learning gaps. From there an individualized plan will be created to develop concept mastery in each discipline beginning with learning gaps. After mastering each concept we will progressively work towards more difficult ones which will enable your child to meet and even exceed grade level expectations . In addition to mastering essential building blocks and concepts in each subject, your child will learn valuable life and study skills that will help him or her excel across curriculum. I have flexible hours and am willing to meet at your place or mine or even a neutral setting - whatever works for you.
